Lincoln Memorial University has an extraordinary mountain setting in northeastern Tennesseee. Established as a living memorial to President Abraham Lincoln, the university was intended to reflect the president's gratitude to the people of eastern Tennessee who remained loyal to the Union during the Civil War. Built on the site of what was once the largest resort hotel in the nation during the 1880s. the university was established in 1887 and has come to be known for its rich literary history, among other distinctions.

Cumberland Gap National Historical Park offers some 70 miles of hiking trails and a deep history of American Indians, early white pioneers, and Civil War fortifications for both Union and Confederate soldiers. It connects eastern Kentucky, with eastern Tennessee and western Virginia and is a haven for wildlife, especially birds.

LMU and Cumberland Gap are less than an hour and a half from Knoxville, TN.
