In Sight of Table Rock
Wildacres Retreat sits atop a mountain called Pompey's Knob at an elevation of 3,300 feet. The property is 1,600 acres, adjacent to the Blue Ridge Parkway--one of the most picturesque roads in the United States. This stretch of the Parkway is surrounded by thousands of acres of the Pisgah National Forest where bear, wild turkey, and deer are plentiful and often visible.
From the Wildacres patio you can watch the sunset and witness clouds play across Mount Mitchell--the highest peak east of the Mississippi. From the front deck of the Wildacres Auditorium, facing east, you can see the sun rise over Table Rock, our workshop's namesake.
Wildacres is a quiet spot, except for the wind that tends to keep things cool, even in summer.
This retreat is dedicated to the betterment of human relations and hosts many workshop groups of artists, writers, musicians, and other nonprofit organizations at work in the world. Ask us to tell you the story of Wildacres' origins, which involved a notorious writer.
Wildacres' buildings are modern yet rustic. Three family-style meals with vegetarian options are served each day in the dining room.
Guests stay in two lodges which have 57 bedrooms. Each room has a private bathroom and accommodates two guests. There are no televisions or telephones in the rooms. The nearest village is Little Switzerland, North Carolina -- about halfway between Asheville and Blowing Rock. Wildacres is also near the 75-year-old Penland School of Crafts . Many nationally recognized craftspersons have studios nearby.
Wildacres is two hours from Charlotte and an hour and a half from Asheville, cities that offer the closest major airports. Participants flying into the workshop will need to rent a car to drive to the workshop site. Please let us know if we can help you identify other participants flying in with whom you may share this expense or we may be able to identify someone coming from the vicinity to pick you up, depending on your flight schedule.
